Sham el-Nessim The Great Egyptian Festival

posted 15 Apr 2012, 09:29 by Manal Raafat   [ updated 15 Apr 2012, 09:33 ]

Sham ennisim is an Egyptian national holiday marking the beginning of spring. It always falls on the day after the Eastern Christian Easter Despite the Christian-related date, the holiday is celebrated by Egyptians regardless of religion.
THE ORIGINAL PHOTO
The name of the holiday is derived from the Egyptian name of the Harvest Season, known as Shemu, which means a day of creation.
The Ancient Egyptians (and even the Egyptians now ) used to offer salted fish, lettuce, and onions to their deities on this day
THE MANIPULATED PHOTO
The holiday was settled on Easter Monday. The date of Sham el-Nessim remained on the Christian-linked date even after most Egyptians had become Muslims.
As Egypt became Arabized, the term Shemu found a rough phono-semantic match in Sham el-Nessim, or " Smelling of the Zephyr " which fairly accurately represents the way in which Egyptians celebrate the holiday.

Celebration of the day
A custom termed 'Shemm en-Nessem' (or the Smelling of the Zephyr) is observed on the first day of the Khamaseen. Early in the morning of this day, many persons, especially women, break an onion, and smell it(as an old habit ).
All the Egyptians Muslims and Christians used to go out side their houses for a walk in groups to calibrate the occasion .
In the course of the forenoon many of the citizens of Cairo ride or walk a little way into the country, or go in boats, generally northward, to take the air, or, as they term it, smell the air, which on that day they believe to have a wonderfully beneficial effect. The greater number dine in the country or on the river. This year they were treated with a violent hot wind, accompanied by clouds of dust, instead of the neseem; but considerable numbers, notwithstanding, went out to 'smell' it.
The modern Sham-ennisim is celebrated by both Christians and Muslims, so it is considered a national festival, rather than a religious one. The main features of the festival are:
  • People spend all day out picnicking in any space of green, public gardens, on the Nile, or at the zoo.
  • Traditional food eaten on this day consists mainly of Feseekh (a salted Grey Mullet), lettuce, scallions or green onions, tirmis(the Egyptian name) or Lupin Beans, and colored boiled eggs.

* فى اليهوديه
* فى المسيحيه

The palace was designed by French architect Alexandre Marcel and decorated by Georges-Louis Claude. Baron Empain ordered them to build huge Indian-style palace ,as he lived many years in India. He was fond of ancient mythology,so was his decision to search for the oldest historic place ,he chose the cradle of ancient civilizations ,he choose Egypt -Mother of the World -.

 The entrance of the palace

Baron has chosen  this site in the middle of the desert ,Close to Cairo .He began to establish his palace according to classic Belgian-style,in front ,in addition to large areas of magnificent gardens.

After five years the architectural masterpiece came out from beneath the Sahara. It was a wonderful mix of  the European architecture and art of Indian architecture.

This architectural masterpiece palace is unique  of its kind on the grounds, that it is only palace in the world ,which escapes him in the sun all day .It is a lavish palace ,it has a tower going on a mobile base , revolves full circle every hour ,to allow the tags to see what sitting around in all directions .

It will be very long to describe that palace so I will describe the Mystery of Palace [ The Cursed Palace]

The palace at night

The Mystery of Palace [ The Cursed Palace]

The Bewitched Room The pink room with red mirrors : The room of Baron Empain ' wife  the pink room in the Basement of The palace,it is the entrance to the crypt to  the Basilica Church . He did not permit any body to enter it even his daughter or sister. The umors said that after the death of  Baron Empain  [ all his family died before him],the mirrors converted to blood on the walls, because the spirit of the Baroness, "Whelan" and his daughter "Miriam"got rested after the death of the harsh Baron.

the Baroness, "Whelan" the sister of Baron Empain :One of  reasons that led to the  increase of the Mystery of the palace was her death fell down from the balcony of her room ,while her brother was revolving  in his tower and he Baron could not help her .At that moment the base stopped turning .That was the first spark of the stories of the ghosts . The rumors are telling that the Spirit of the Baroness, "Helena" Schtt of the delay of Baron to save her and that was the cause of the breakdown of the Revolving tower [ its rotation stopped from that time until the death of Baron Empain in 1928] .

Some rumors tell that the people are hearing voices of quarrel between the Baron and his sister and some times soft talking of the father and daughter

Stories are telling that Baron Empain Has succeeded after the death of his sister in the preparation of her soul to apologize for lack of initiative quickly to save her . He feels that the spirit of his sister did not accept his apologizing,so he entered a period of terrible depression finally led to his death and the daughter also.

"Miriam" the daughter of Baron Empain

She was hit with poliomyelitis shortly after her birth .Because of the bad treatment of her father she was sitting in some rooms in the crypt alone and feel happiness and she was telling that she was with a nice friend .That was the start of  Satanism [ Devil worship] .

After some time Miriam was found dumped on her face and dead ,nobody knows the reason

Baron Empain The Founder of Heliopolis

He was a wealthy Belgian engineer,Entrepreneur ,financier, industrialist,as well as an amateur Egyptologist.

Édouard Empain arrived in Egypt in January 1904, intending to rescue one of the projects of his company .

King of France granted the title of a baron in recognition of his efforts in the establishment of the Paris Metro.

He died in Belgium ,and was buried in Egypt in the bottom of the Basilica Church which was linked by palace with underground tunnel

Of its projects outside Egypt : he created Bank of Brussels in Belgium.

This past is so long so I will add some picture for the palace only.

Sinai Peninsula

posted 2 May 2011, 14:20 by Manal Raafat

Sinai is the land of discovery. It is the route to the Promised Land, where Isis sought Osiris and the Pharaohs found gold. After 8,000 years at the heart of history, experience the continuing contrasts. Sinai is where rock meets coral reef and the desert stops at the sea.It is the grandeur of granite meeting golden beaches. Here, you will find tropical fish and rare birds, spectacular sunsets and clear starry nights.

The name Sinai is derived from the Mount Sinai .
The Sinai Peninsula or Sinai is a triangular peninsula in Egypt which is about 60,000 km square  It lies between the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Red Sea to the south. It is the only part of Egypt located in Asia. Egyptians also refer to it as the "Land of Fayrouz" The peninsula is divided into two Egyptian governorates[North ,and South], and has a population of approximately 1.3 million people.

North Sinai[ Shamal Sinai]
El-Arish has shady palm beaches , Mediterranean waves and the glowing colors of Bedouin crafts.

South Sinai[  Ganub Sinai]
Sharm el-Sheikh is the simplicity of sun, sea and sand. The luxury of five-star hotels, water sports, shopping and entertainment.
Ras Mohamed is a world famous paradise of coral gardens and tropical fish.
Mount Moses ,sometimes referred to as the Holy Mountains (El-Tur) .The 7,497 foot mountain has 3,750 steps hewn out of stone by monks of St. Catherine's Monastery, which is located just to the North.
Dahab  Dahab means "gold" in Arabic. In Sinai it means golden sands, and turquoise sea. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sinai that presents divers and snorkelers a wide variety of tropical fish in every color of the rainbow.
Taba It lies at the northernmost edge of the Gulf of Aqaba. In modern times, it is best known as the last piece of land that was returned to Egypt following Israel's occupation of Sinai.
Sinai is one of the coldest provinces in Egypt because of its high altitudes and mountainous topographies. Winter temperatures in some of Sinai's cities and towns reach −16 °C (3.2 °F).

Interesting Sites of Sinai
-Blue Desert The Blue Desert, lies western and very close to the monastery of St. Catherine's. The Belgian artist Jean Verame has painted many boulders with a blue colour. It was - with the permission of the late president Anwar El Sadat - meant to symbol the end of the war between Israel and Egypt.
-Blue Hole This most famous and probably most beautiful diving spot in all Sinai, also known as "The Canyon", lies approx. 10 km north of Dahab.
-Coloured Canyon The Colored Canyon has become a very popular safari destination. It lies close to the town of Nuweiba and can be combined with a trip to the St. Catherine's Monastery.
-Ayun Musa  Ayun Musa (Moses springs) is a small oasis, situated south of Suez.
-Hammam Pharaon
Approx. 45 km south of Ras Sidr, there is the Pharaoh’s Bath called Hammam Pharaon. There are hot water springs as well as a cave that leads inside the bath. It is very hot here and it smells of Hydrogen Sulfate.
-Ras Mohamed The Ras Mohamed National Park is a nature protected area approx. 30 km south of Sharm El Sheikh.
-Tiran Island Tiran lies in the Gulf of Aqaba, right between Ras Mohamed and Saudi Arabia, divers are attracted to this place, that offers plenty of opportunities for brilliant views and underwater safaris.
- There are more places to visit in Sinai .

I had collected some pictures from Sinai to show you its beauty that comes from its nature .I designed photo shop picture to collect some picture on a blue background to resemble the pure blue color of its sea ,and white dots to resemble the falling snow in winter.I had been there long time ago and I could not forget it ,and its nice palm beach in El-Arish with the golden sand and blue water and clear sky .

HOW TO COLLECT THAT PICTURES TOGETHER ?

Open a new document with dimension of 600 x 500 pixels with transparent background .

Fill the layer with the color you like[ Edit -Fill]  and add layer style to it [ Style Panel].The trick in this design is the using of the layer style blending mode ,from the Layer Panel adjust it as shown in the picture.
Add the pictures one by one [File -Place]. Put each picture in separate layer .Use the Free Transform Tool to adjust it .
Apply layer style if you like .
 Save your work.

The Nile River

The Greek historian Herodotus wrote that "Egypt was the gift of the Nile"

The Nile is t

he longest river in the world, stretching north for approximately 4,000 miles from East Africa to the Mediterranean.

It had changed its  location and size gradually over millions of years according to the studies.

The Nile has two major branches, the White Nile and Blue Nile. The latter is the source of most of the water and fertile soil, but The former is the longer. It runs from East Africa to upper Egypt and ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea, most of its length through Egypt.

It had an important role in the development of Egyptian civilization.

The Nile is living in the hearts of the Egyptians .If you had been in Egypt you will see the Egyptians always going to the Nile if they feel sad ,angry, happy and also the lovers are going there in the open air smelling the flower's smell and pure air .

You can also ride in a boat like the one of my picture.

I got these informations from many resources .

I got that simple photo  and I wanted to add my own touch .

You can know how to make if you will read more .

HOW TO MAKE?

Open the picture you like for the background in photoshop .

  1. Place the picture [file -place]the picture you like on the top of the background in a new layer .
  2. Again apply ( add a layer style) to add the Bevel and Emboss to the picture.
  3. Lastly apply the frame all around the photo from the custom shape tool and choose the shape and style for the frame.
  4.  save your work.

Red Sea

The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. The connection to the ocean is in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. In the north, there is the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez leading to the Suez Canal .

The Name

Red Sea is a direct translation of the Greek Erythra Thalassa . Arabic Al-Baḥr Al-Aḥmar or Baḥr Al-Qalzam.The name of the sea may signify the seasonal blooms of the red-coloured Trichodesmium erythraeum[ is a type of filamentous cyanobacteria] near the water's surface.

Another hypothesis is that the name comes from the Himyarite, a local group whose own name means red.

It is theorized that it was named so because it borders the Egyptian Desert, which the ancient Egyptians called the Dashret or "red land"; therefore it would have been the sea of the red land. The mountains surrounding the red sea [ Red Sea Mountains]is high and reddish in color.

The Red Sea is one of four seas named in English with color terms [ the Black Sea, the White Sea and the Yellow Sea].

In the photo you can see the red color of the stones of the mountains of the red sea .

Its History

The earliest known exploration of the Red Sea was conducted by Ancient Egyptians, as they attempted to establish commercial routes to Punt [type of boats]. One such expedition took place around 2500 BC, and another around 1500 BC. Both involved long voyages down the Red Sea.

Along the history there were many attempts to connect The Red Sea with The White Sea ,that ends with The Suez Canal ,that  was opened in November 1869.

Its Geology

The Red Sea was formed by Arabia[ Arabian Peninsula] splitting from Africa due to movement of the Red Sea Rift. The sea is still widening and it is considered that the sea will become an ocean in time.

The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem [ An ecosystem is a biological environment consisting of all the organisms living in a particular area, as well as all the nonliving, physical components of the environment with which the organisms interact, such as air, soil, water, and sunlight].More than 1200 species of fish have been recorded in the Red Sea, and around 10% of these are found nowhere else. This also includes 42 species of deepwater fish .

The Tourism

The sea is known for its spectacular  sport diving sites, such as Ras Mohammed ,and Rocky Island in Egypt and less known sites in Sudan such as Sanganeb, Abington, Angarosh and Shaab Rumi .Popular tourist resorts include El Gouna, Hurghada, Safaga, Marsa Alam, on the western shore of the Red Sea, and Sharm-El-Sheikh, Dahab, and Taba on the Egyptian side of Sinaï, as well as Aqaba in Jordan and Eilat in Israel in an area known as the Red Sea Riviera.

Tourism in the South of the Red Sea is presently considered risky because of the presence of pirates originating from uncontrolled zones of Somalia. Large vessels such as cargoes are sometimes attacked by heavily armed high-speed boats. The situation is even worse in the Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen.

I had never dive under the red sea but I had tried to imagine what is there and I designed that picture .

I designed it with photo-shop ,using the Custom Shape Tool ,and Free Transform to adjust the size[ scale] direction .

Sharm el-Sheikh"City of Peace"

posted 25 Apr 2011, 13:39 by Manal Raafat

Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the most popular tourist places in the Arab world. But there are also some very good reasons to visit it if you are not the common tourist, who likes to lie on the beach all day. It is one of the finest diving spots in the world and a trip into the desert is an unforgettable adventure.

Sharm el-Sheikh is a city situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in South Sinai Governorate, Egypt, on the coastal strip along the Red Sea. Its population is approximately 35,000 (2008). It is popular with package holiday makers and divers.

Its Name

Sharm el-Sheikh is sometimes called the "City of Peace", referring to the large number of international peace conferences that have been held there. It is also transliterated as Sharm ash- Shaykh and popularly known simply as "Sharm".It means bay of the Sheikh.

 Its History and Geography

Sharm el-Sheikh is on a promontory overlooking the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba

About 40 years ago, Sharm el-Sheikh was nothing but a small fishing village with about 100 Bedouin citizens, but its strategic importance led to its transformation from a fishing village into a major port .

Sharm el-Sheikh city has been subdivided into five homogeneous centers, namely Nabq, Ras Nusrani, Naama Bay, Umm Sid and Sharm El Maya[ Na'ama Bay part of the city is the center of nightlife and dining: most of Sharm's clubs, cafes, restaurants and shops are here].There is also an airport in Sharm el-Sheikh. Sharm el-Sheikh Airport is the largest in the Sinai, and receives plane-loads of charter tourists daily in the winter high season. The only airline for local flights is Egypt Air .

The land plan shows that the total area of Sharm el-Sheikh is expected to be about 42 square kilometres by the year 2017.

During the 2011 Egyptian protests, President Hosni Mubarak reportedly went to Sharm el-Sheikh and resigned there on 11 February 2011.

Climate

The average temperatures during the winter months (November to March) range from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius (59-95°F) and during the summer months (April to October) from 20 to 45 degrees Celsius (68-113°F). The temperature of the Red Sea in this region ranges from 21 to 28 degrees Celsius (70-84°F) over the course of the year.

Tourism  in Sharm

Sharm el-Sheikh's major industry is foreign and domestic tourism, owing to its dramatic landscape, year-round dry and temperate climate and long stretches of natural beaches. Its waters are clear and calm for most of the year and have become popular for various watersports, particularly recreational scuba diving and snorkeling which some consider to be among the best in the world. There is great scope for scientific tourism with diversity in marine life species; 250 different coral reefs and 1000 species of fish.

Diving

Diving is the main activity in Sharm el-Sheikh. When you dive into the warm water of the Red Sea and leave the remote desert behind, you will enter a world full of life and colors.

After all of what I had mentioned about Sharm I decided to design an invitation card with its name .That you can fold like a book in the middle .

The card is designed with illustrator ,and the picture with photo-shop.I hope you will like both .

Her HOW TO DESIGN WITH ILLUSTRATOR .

To design that artwork ,open a new document in illustrator with dimensions the same hight of the picture you like to add and double the width of the picture.

  • Draw a rectangle all around the document with no stroke and the color you like.
  •  Go to Effect menu and select Texture then select Grain ,in the box adjust the Intensity and Contrast as you like.
  • Add new layer and place the picture [ File -Place] .Move the picture to the side you like using the Selection Tool.
  • Add new layer for the Text [add new layer for each text to be easy to adjust].To apply an effect to the text go to Effect menu -Stylize and select the style you like [ Drop Shadow ,Inner and Outer glow and so on].
  • save your work.

Egyptian Museum

posted 20 Apr 2011, 05:52 by Manal Raafat   [ updated 27 Apr 2011, 13:44 ]

It is the second most frequently visited and certainly one of the most important attractions in Cairo after the Great Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx.

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo, Egypt, is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It has 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display, the remainder in storerooms.

History and Description

It was built in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden .The museum soon moved to Boulaq in 1858 because the original building was getting to be too small to hold all of the artifacts. The new building was to be constructed on the bank of the Nile River in Boulaq. In 1878, after the museum has been completed for some time, it suffered some irreversible damage; a flood of the Nile River caused the antiquities to be relocated to another museum, in Giza. The artifacts remained there until 1902 when they were moved, for the last time, to the current museum in Tahrir Square.

The last museum in Tahrir Square was built during the reign of Khedive Abbass Helmi II in 1897, and opened on November 15, 1902. It has 107 halls. At the ground floor there are the huge statues. The upper floor houses small statues, jewels, Tutankhamon treasures and the mummies.

The Museum also comprises a photography section and a large library. The Egyptian museum comprises many sections arranged in chronological order.

A hall for the royal mummies was opened at the museum .The Royal Mummies Room is another highlight of the Egyptian Museum. Here you can see the mummies of many great Egyptian rulers, including Ramses II, the builder of the temples at Abu Simbel.

More than a million and half tourists visit the museum annually, in addition to half a million Egyptians.

Interior design

There are two main floors of the museum, the ground floor and the first floor.

On the ground floor there is an extensive collection of papyrus and coins used in the Ancient world.

Several languages are found on these pieces, including Greek, Latin, Arabic, and the Ancient Egyptian writing language of hieroglyphs. The coins found on this floor are made of many different metals, including gold, silver, and bronze. The coins are not only Egyptian, but also Greek, Roman, and Islamic.

On the first floor there are artifacts from the final two dynasties of Ancient Egypt, including items from the tombs of the Pharaohs Thutmosis III, Thutmosis IV, Amenophis II, Hatshepsut, and the courtier Maiherpri, as well as many artifacts from the Valley of the Kings.

I had collected some pictures for the entrance of the museum ,its hall, and some antiques  in one picture .

HOW TO MAKE ?

To make like that picture collection

  1. Open new transparent document with the dimensions you like .
  2. Add new layer and fill it with the color you like[Edit menu Fill].
  3. Place the picture you like [File menu Place].
  4. Apply transformer to adjust the size and direction you like.
  5. You can add layer style to each layer .
  6. Save your work.
Thanks
